1. What is an MES?
An MES, or Manufacturing Execution System, enables manufacturers to track and document the transformation of raw materials to finished products. The MES also provides real-time information about activity, overall equipment effectiveness (OEE), and product quality enabling supervisors to understand how current conditions on the plant floor can be optimized to improve production. The MES and ERP, or Enterprise Resource Planning, work hand-in-hand as essential manufacturing systems. ERP data is fed downstream to the MES to provide reference product information, production demand, master schedules, master data, bill of materials (BOM), standard operating procedures, change orders, inventories, planned resources, and target performance metrics. In turn, the MES is the performance and operation management engine—enabling manufacturers to understand and adjust production in real-time based on current conditions. The data flow between the two systems is bi-directional. MES feeds data back upstream to the ERP system with order status, resource usage, as-built genealogy, and time events. The MES should enable manufactures to reduce scrap, capture cost information, increase uptime, optimize Net Labor Efficiency (NLE), reduce unnecessary inventory, and trace product genealogy.
